Lady Alsha stands before a panel of three inquisitors to inform them of the antics of Sabreeza of the Merchant’s Guild. But they are not convinced. Instead of supporting military action they would investigate the allegations that Sabreeza has abused his power.
Fasha catches up with Prism and Styx. Blades start to fly and Fasha and Prism end up in the black lake. Prism surfaces but a tentacle grabs Fasha and drag him underwater. They quickly leave and head to Madame Godani’s guild hall, which is not far from the docks. She is Styx’s mother.
Salidar confronts his son, Maxthane, over letting Styx free and confesses to sending Fasha to track him down. Maxthane confesses his love for Styx so Salidar sends for Dogo to follow and prevent Fasha from killing Styx. But will be get to Fasha in time?
Lady Alsha and Kirra’s investigation continues. They decide to go under cover and speak to a local blacksmith where he tells how Sabreeza runs the Merchant’s Guild.
Maxthane has risked a great deal in letting Styx escape; but Styx still needs to get out of the city. While trying to leave, he meets Prism.
Something strange has happened in the city, Kirra investigates. The investigation takes him to a tavern where he finds out that Shades had come into the city.
Styx survives the fight and comes face to face with Salidar’s son, Maxthane, who wants him to become his personal servant. Styx refuses and is forced along by Maxthane’s guards.
Styx, Kutos and Hurr face a demon in the arena. The fight is bloody and makes Maxthane, Salidar’s son, so anxious he ends he fight but all three gladiators are suffering and fighting for their lives.
Styx is thrown in the gladiator pit where he meets Kutos and Grim. He is soon faced with his first fight to save his life.
Where there was business in The Shade there was also profit to be made by those on the sidelines and Styx was going to take advantage of it. While looting a merchant’s house he meets Dogo.
