Transcending Friendship

Part Four: Another Friday

“Another sleepover? They’re getting to be very frequent now.” My mother was beginning to get suspicious.

Most weekends, Scott and I would spend it together and sleepover at either my or his place. This weekend would be the fourth time in a row, and it was my turn to have Scott at my home.

“Something’s wrong, I can feel it,” Mum said. “You two seem to be joined at the hip now. It was never like that. You used to have other friends round, but now I see no-one else but Scott. Has something happened at school?”

“Don’t be daft, Mum. Everything’s fine. I just have more in common with Scott than my other mates, and I still hang around with them at school.” I decided to floor her with a fatal blow. “Besides, you can’t complain, my marks have gone up loads since I started working with Scott. I should get decent GCSEs instead of just average.”

My mother frowned, she knew I was doing really well at school and wouldn’t want to jeopardise it. “Well, at least he is a good influence on you.”

There was a knock at the door. “That’ll be Scott. So is it alright for tonight?”

“I suppose so.” She sighed.

Dashing to the door, I made to leave for school, but my mother stopped me.

“Matthew. You are not going to school like that. Come here.”

I had to leave Scott outside while my mother fiddled with my shirt’s top button and tightened my tie. I felt like a five-year-old being dressed for his first day at school. I supposed it was my mother’s way of telling me I was still her little boy.

“That’s better. And pull your trousers up. I don’t want any son of mine looking slovenly.”

Pulling up my black trousers over my hips, I went to the front door to greet Scott. Finally, I got out of the house and on my way to school.

We found it difficult to keep our relationship secret as we were still very much in the stage where we wanted to touch and kiss one another incessantly. It was such a strain on our walks to and from school as we wanted to walk holding hands, or arm in arm.
